A SCIENTIST famous for his television appearances officially opened an Arborfield secondary school last Friday.
Professor Robert Winston, who is also a member of the House of Lords, visited the Bohunt School, where he cut the ribbon, spoke to pupils and took part in a tour of the new facilities.
The Bohunt opened its doors in 2016, but only moved into its new state-of-the-art complex this year.
During his visit, Professor Winston, who presents the BBC’s Child of our Time series of programmes, joined with guests from Wokingham Borough Council and Dawnus PLC who helped make the new free school come to fruition.
Following a tour of the school by its head boy and girl, he gave a lecture to years 7 and 8 called Why Bother With Science?
After a buffet lunch, the entire school gathered outside its main entrance for a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Ben Godber, Headteacher at Bohunt School Wokingham, said: “It has been incredible to be part of the journey at Bohunt Wokingham from the very beginning to see this vision come to life.
“Rarely do schools and young people get opportunities like this to start from scratch with new facilities and a blank canvas on which to evolve.
“The project has been a significant investment for the Borough Council and Bohunt is delighted to be shaping the future of the school and the new community growing around us.
“Starting a new school is a unique challenge and it has been both a privilege and thrill to see how well the staff, students and their families have embraced the opportunities, difficulties and compromises that come with that.
“There have been challenges along the way and we are continuing to work hard to raise the bar ever higher, as we strive to see the best possible provision achieved for our young people and community.
“They only get one crack at education and we have a duty to make it the best it can be.
“We would like to thank all those who have been involved with the school project over the past few years, from inception to delivery. It has been a mammoth task and is not over yet.”
